Obverse
Above there is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine); in the center, against the background of a conventionalized ornamental pattern of flowers and leaves, there is a portrait bust of the founder and first director of the garden with indication of his name thereunder ХРИСТІАН СТЕВЕН (Christian Steven); below there are the coin issue year indication 2012 and the crescent-like legend -П'ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ (five hryvnias) on the white copper one. On the latter, to the left, there is the National Bank of Ukraine Mint logo.
Reverse
There are depicted: a pond with a fountain in the middle; against the background of waterscape, in the middle distance, a garden part with a pavilion; against the background of the pond below - the legend НІКІТСЬКИЙ / БОТАНІЧНИЙ САД / 1812-2012 (Nikitsky / Botanical Garden / 1812-2012).
