Description:
Obverse
The large coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia, with the year 1997 inscribed below, is placed in the centre. The inscriptions LATVIJAS and REPUBLIKA, each arranged in a semicircle, are above and beneath the central motif, respectively.
Reverse
A 12th century ship is featured in the upper part of the coin. The inscription RIGAS KUGIS XII GS (Riga ship 12th century), arranged in a semicircle, is above the motif. The wreck of the ship discovered during excavations is depicted in the lower part; the numeral 10 and the inscription LATU (lats) are placed beneath the motif.
