Obverse
Crowned CR in centre, a reference to Charles I (demonstrating that the city was royalist), and surrounded the legend "While I live, I hope." Charles I was executed the next year.
Reverse
A representation of Pontefract castle, showing a hand holding a sword protruding from the right side, symbolic of ongoing resistance, the letters P C at top for Pontefract, OBS left of castle, denoting a state of besiegement (from the latin obsessum), and date below. The denomination XII (12 pence or shilling) appears between the P and C; this is SP#3149, included in the year list.
