There is the Small National Emblem of Ukraine with the semicircular legend НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine), below there are the coin face value and issue year - 5 ГРИВЕНЬ/2009 (5 hryvnias/2009) as well as the composition symbolizing two main subjects of Gogol's creative work: that of Ukraine with its history, traditions, myths and the topic of the imperial capital city with its high life, etc.
Reverse
There is a portrait of Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol dressed in a cape and a vyshyvanka (embroidered shirt) embodying the land that had educated him. Above there is the semicircular inscription МИКОЛА ГОГОЛЬ (Nikolai Gogol in Ukrainian) and below 1809/1852 – years of his life.
