Obverse

In the center — the Emblem of the Bank of Russia (the two headed eagle designed by I.Bilibin, lower — the semicircular inscription — «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA) framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim: at the top — «ТРИ РУБЛЯ» (THREE RUBLES), at the bottom — «1999», the letters to the left indicate the metal sign and the fineness, to the right —the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.

Reverse

The picture of members of an expedition against the background of a mountain plateau, to the right — the dates «1879» «1880», at the top to the left — a mountain goat, to the right a yak, at the bottom to the left — the Przhevalsky's horse and to the right — an antelope. The inscription along the rim: «1-я ТИБЕТСКАЯ ЭКСПЕДИЦИЯ» (THE 1ST TIBET EXPEDITION).
