Top left and low right, wavy lines symbolising navigations, low left the Portuguese coat of arms, top right the personal arms of the King John II, a pilican woonding his chest to feed his chicks with the moto "Pela Lei e Pela Grei" ("by Law and by the People" in ancient Portuguese. Around, name of the country and value, circle of pearls.
Reverse
Crowned portrait of Joao II of Portugal holding a ship of the 16th century, a lateen three masted caravel. Around the name of the king and the year of his death 1495.
